CMO Checking In

Posted on Thu Jun 20th, 2019 @ 10:50pm by Captain Abigail Laurens & Lieutenant Commander Calvin Morgan

Mission: Getting To Know You
Location: Ready Room

Having settled into his room, Calvin first took a swing by the sickbay. He found it empty except for a few technicians doing last minute checks on the systems. Probably from the starbase, he thought to himself, judging by the uniforms and the equipment. He had been up and rustling around since he got onboard at 0400, and decided that 5 hours of unpacking and exploring was enough keep from being an inappropriately early reporting in for duty.

As he rode up the turbo lift, he glanced down at his uniform. Parts of it were well worn and faded, but not a single tear or rip. He chuckled to himself that this one had no stains on it. One last straightening and smoothing out of the uniform led to the turbo lift doors opening. He walked across the bridge, which was eerily quiet due to being in dock. A quick inhale, and slow exhale helped calm his nerves as he tapped the chime to the ready room.

With more and more crew starting to report in, Abigail was finding herself with a steady flow of visitors, so much so that very little else was being accomplished other than the greeting of the new crew members, but she couldn't have been happier with the outcomes. From what she could tell so far, she had been handed an impressive crew, something which definitely made the idea of command a lot less daunting.

The sound of the chime was met with a smile as she stood up, waiting as the doors parted to allow access. Her smile became one of recognition as she realized the identity of the new comer. "Lieutenant Morgan," she said warmly, holding her hand out. "Providential timing, I was just looking over your transfer records."

A quick but informal salute preceded his shaking her hand. "Captain Laurens, the pleasure is mine." He was quite happy he had read his orders before coming to the ready room. "I hope my records paint a good picture that I can live up to," he added as they worked their way back to her desk.

Abigail gave a light laugh as she motioned for him to take the seat across from her at the desk, picking up her mug she had long since abandoned, wincing at the cold she could feel seeping through to the outside of the mug. "So, it seems I need a fresh drink, would you like one?" she asked with a shake of her head. "And I don't know about you, but I could murder a decent doughnut right now!"

Calvin chuckled, "Well I haven't had breakfast so I wouldn't say no to a doughnut and coffee, black," He said with gratitude. He made his way to the seat and sat down, leaning into the back of the chair and bringing one leg up so its ankle rested on his knee. He glanced around the room trying to get a feel for the decorations and his senior officer.

Replicating the black coffee and a fresh chai latte for herself, along with a plate of assorted doughnuts, Abigail set them down on the desk, smiling as she caught him looking around. "It's still pretty bare, truth be told, I just haven't really gotten around to getting some of my stuff up here. Sometimes I can be surprisingly lazy when the mood strikes," she said with a grin. "But there's also something to be said for the new and shiny too, the unmarred bulkheads and carpets, everything so fresh and untainted by what ever happened before."

"I wasn't one for decorating much," He replied simply, having leaned forward to pick a doughnut. He eventually took a glazed blueberry, sniffing it before taking a bite. Looking satisfied, he leaned back in his chair. "So what have I gotten myself into with this latest transfer?"

Abigail laughed. "Well, I'm really hoping it's not going to be anywhere near that kind of crazy, though I'm sure every Commanding Officer says that when they assume the position don't they? Famous last words or something like that?"

Calvin smiled, finishing the last of his doughnut. "Yes, yes probably something along those lines. I don't mind crazy, it's part of the job. I'm a hands on kind of doctor, and I don't mind a little risk or adversity. Before I got stuck up and proper I worked as a corpsman and medic. Anyways, anything you want or need from me? Besides the boring job description of CMO?"

"Crew medicals, specifically senior staff should be the most pressing priority. I'd like as many as possible done before we depart the Starbase. Make sure you check over sickbay, it should be fully stocked, but just make sure there are no issues and you have all the supplies we're likely to need. Again, it's much easier to requisition supplies now while we're still docked than it is once we depart. Other than that, I'm happy to trust you to run your department as you see fit," Abigail replied. "I'm not going to be breathing down your neck and watching your every move."

"Perfect," he stated as he leaned forward, taking a breath before continuing. "I run things my way anyways, my sickbay, my rules. Pips don't matter when people are on my turf. I can be unconventional, but everything I do has reason. Sickbay will run smoother than a Swedish timepiece in a Grunge mob pit." He sipped his coffee, happy with his odd analogy that he wasn't sure made sense.

Abigail laughed openly, completely unable to help herself. "You know, I was going to retort, but no, I can't beat that," she said with a shake of her head. "You know, I think I'm going to like having you on this ship. I just have this feeling that you're going to keep me on my toes."

"I'm fantastic, and I will probably do that, either in a good or bad way, but I'll keep you on your toes for sure," He replied, faking more of an ego than he really has.

"Just remember, my background is entirely in security. I can kill you in dozens of ways and hide your body in locations that no one will ever find you again, and that's before we even leave the station," Abigail said forward, leaning forward and smiling sweetly.

"That's alright, I'll let you take three guesses what I put in your tea. Hallucinogenic? Painkiller? Poison? Who knows? And I do the autopsy, so as far as I'm concerned it was of no foul play. Or maybe I put it in the air and I already gave myself the antidote?" Calvin shrugged, leaning forward, smiling back. "Don't mess with medical."

Abigail laughed. "I like you," she said with an approving nod. "I think I might just keep you around after all."

"Guess I won't kill you yet then. Autopsys are too much paperwork anyways. I'd hate to take too much of your time. You will need to come down for your physical at some point. Do not think you can get away without one." Calvin said, sitting upright in the chair.

"Make an appointment for me before we leave Starbase and I'll be there," Abigail replied warmly. "I'll be good and lead by example."

"0800 tomorrow," he said easily, standing up and giving her an informal salute. "I'll see you then,"

Watching as he walked out of her office, Abigail shook her head. "Cocky sod," she muttered under her breath, still smiling.
