Mission:
Enforced Intermission
Location: sickbay
Lt Mica Rue, newly awakened after her miss-integration with her implants, rubbed her temple. She shut her eyes, pinching her forehead between thumb and forefinger.
Having finished with a patient nearby, Calvin was walking by when he saw the motion of LT. Rue. Peaking his interest, he stopped, grabbing a PaDD from the nearby console to check on her chart and her.
Mica tried to smile. "It's alright, just a little headache."
It wasn't little, nor was it alright, but the woman suspected it had more to do with the immense amount of concentration over the past day than her technical mishap. Since regaining consciousness, the Lt had been trying to remember whatever had triggered the burnout of the implants. With only fleeting memories of the incident, she was now sure whatever had caused the devices to revert in function were related to what she had written on the PADD.
Though how that made sense, she still wasn't sure.
She watched the doctor pick up a tricorder. "Really, sir, I'm fine. Or at least fine enough for now. The implants have been deactivated and aside from me having to control my memory output, I'm just fine." She smiled, though the glee didn't spread to her tired eyes. "You have enough to do with the other injured, you don't need me hanging around." She swung her legs over the side of the bed, standing. Unsure if she would be hale enough to stand, her legs held her up all the same.
“Oh Lieutenant, you know I never say no to a guest in my house,” Calvin said scanning around her head. He stopped several times, tweaking settings and double checking results. “I think you’ll be getting right back into that bed for now,” He said with a smile. A passive suggestion that carried an implied order.
Mica stared at the doctor, biting her lip. Like most patients, she would rather be on the giving end than receiving. But she remembered the doctor had been highly competent, when she had been on the ship before. More than competent. More than fair.
Nodding slowly with a frown, she sat back on the bed, curling her fingers over the edge on either side of her.
Calvin smiled as she followed his implied instruction. Moving around the bed he started up a neurological scanning device, positioning it near her head to do a more detailed scan. "Unfortunately even with them disabled, I'm concerned the damage to them may result in occasion short circuit or them turning back on. And of course, whatever damage has possibly already been done. Thoughts on the implants shorting out?"
She almost shook her head, but was aware of the device near her. Instead she sighed. "Not exactly. I helped design it myself, and my team did all the practical and technical testing. The implants proved to be extremely reliable and under strain did not waver in electronic intensity or give any concern of shorting out." Her eyebrows furrowed. "They were implanted quite a while ago and worked perfectly, until..." She frowned further.
“Until?” Calvin asked, wanting to let her continue on her thought process before interrupting.
"Until..." she shifted, her headache gaining in soreness as she tried to think of the cause. "I don't remember much, but there was something I had written on a padd in my quarters around the same time that..." she did shake her head then, but put fingers on her temple when the action proved harmful. "I don't remember..."
“Is the PaDD still in the quarters? And do you have all the test data from the initial tests?” Calvin asked both questions in quick succession, working through data coming from his current scans.
"It is," Mica rubbed her temple moreso. "At least, it was. It should be. As for the test results, they would have them at the institution back on trill but..." she broke off. "I've heard there have been problems with the ship systems. I doubt it would be as easy as contacting them."
“There have been, many in fact,” Calvin said, rubbing the back of his neck. “Most of sickbay’s systems are having issues now. We are running independent diagnostic machines that are disconnected from the main system. So far some luck with that. But they weren’t designed to all run solo like this which is giving it’s own problems.”
This piqued Mica's interest. She sat up straighter, eyeing the consoles across the room. "Independent diagnostics? That seems...efficient if cumbersome. But I bet I could help, sir." she leaned forward, glancing around the doctor her mind already at work, berried deep into microchips and cables. "It wouldn't take long I'm sure, and I'm sure I could get them running--" At her next thought of micro hardware imaging a burst of pain shot from one temple to the next. Mica gasped, her body tightening before she fell forward into the doctor's arms, limp.
"Well, that's why we didn't leave Sickbay," He said mostly to himself. "Code Blue!" He said loudly, getting a response of nurses and other medical personnel around them. "Lets assume for now the neurological implants are causing the problems. Ensure vital stability and start imaging the head." Calvin stepped back while his well oiled team did their work. He contemplated the next steps of the implants. "If only I knew more about them," He mumbled to himself, looking at diagnostics.
