Checking in & Checking Up

Posted on Thu Apr 27th, 2023 @ 12:51pm by Lieutenant Commander Calvin Morgan & Captain Abigail Laurens

Mission: Lower Decks

Sickbay was quieter than Abigail expected. For some reason she had expected the medical center of the ship to be a hive of activity now that all the crew had returned shipside. She had expected there to be a slew of patients all needing attention, but instead there was a sense of tranquility that seemed to ebb through the central room. With a smile and a nod to the chief nurse, Abigail made her way across the open space to the offices on the other side, pausing in the doorway of the Chief Medical Officer, watching him in silence for the briefest of moments before tapping lightly on the glass panel next to the door. "Got a minute or five?" she asked quietly.

"Always for the Captain," Calvin replied, sitting up straighter in the chair and settling his feet back on the ground. He turned to square up on the desk and placed the PADD on the desktop. "Please, have a seat. What can I do for you?"

Offering a smile, Abigail slid into the seat and leaned back, crossing her legs neatly, watching him again for a moment before she responded. "First and foremost I just wanted to check in with you and see how you were holding up after everything."

"Oh fine," he replied. "We almost have equipment squared away, so the buearucracy of it all should be done soon. On a more interesting note, I've fielded some intriguing conversations with the Dalacari and T'sungi since the event on medical topics. We've apparently made an impact of some sort out here."

"So it seems," she said quietly. "Our willingness to put our own lives on the line to protect the Acehaya from the Koldaran has garnered us some favour. Seems they finally figured out that we weren't planet smuggling after all." She sighed, a sigh tinged with what almost felt like the weight of the universe. "I know you've already got a lot you're dealing with, but in light of everything I'm going to order full medicals for the entire crew. I don't expect it to be done quickly, but perhaps you can work out some kind of triage system to get it done? Start with senior staff and work down the list. I'll be ordering full psych evals as well." There was another pause as Abigail stared at the toe of her boot for a moment, not meeting his eyes. "I want to be sure everyone that came back is as best as they can be."

"Veznia and myself have spoken a few times briefly about debriefing everyone. Once my house is sorted I will begin that process." Calvin paused for a moment, pondering his comannding officer who sat in front of him. "I do have some time right now, and can get a small start. Starting with the senior staff would be starting with you."

Abigail's eyes narrowed slightly as she frowned in his direction. "That wasn't what I meant and you know it."

Calvin leaned forward, a subtle smile on his face. "Starting with senior staff and work down the list. I know a guy, we can get you in right away I believe."

"I'm not going to be able to get out of it, am I?" Abigail asked, raising one eyebrow slightly at the hint of a smile on his face. She shook her head slightly and sighed with exasperation. "Then at least make it quick."

"Quick? What fun would that be?" He asked while getting up and putting on his lab coat, a reflex at this point. He ushered the Captain into the indiviudal exam areas. A small grace he wanted to give her to an annoyance of a situation. He pulled a tricorder and started the console. "A seat on the bio bed please. Any concerns before we begin?"

Abigail near scowled as she slid onto the bio bed. "No, now can we get this over and done with?"

Calvin scanned slowly with his tricorder, at his usual pace in his usual order of items. Every so often he would put the tricorder down and check an area with palpation, or glance at a spot while watching the readings of the tricorder. To him it was almost a ballroom dance at this point. Intricate steps with gross motor movements in a repitition that had perfect steps and details, yet was unique every time. "And how do you plan on getting a days relaxation in all of this?" He asked.

The Commanding Officer arched an eyebrow slightly as she looked at the Chief Medical Officer, the expression on her face best described as humorous. "You're funny when you want to be, you know that?" she replied with a shake of her head.

"One full shift off. No work. I will let the XO know," Calvin said as he closed his tricorder and looked her dead in the eye with little emotion. "No argument."

"That isn't possible, there's stuff to be done, stuff that only I can take care of!" Abigail protested.

"Great," Calvin replied, his smile and nonchalence returning. "I'm glad you are stepping up for your crew."

There was a sigh of resignation. "And exactly what am I supposed to do with that time?" she demanded, an edge of annoyance to her voice.

Calvin raised an eyebrow. "Well, whatever you'd like. Holodeck. Sleep. Read a book? Your choice. Your body needs a day to dump the stress it's accumulated," He replied without changing from his positive tone.

"What ever I like? I'd like to work, and be on the bridge where I'm needed." She grinned wickedly. "You did say what ever I like."

"You may, but you'll find yourself relieved until further evaluation, and with my schedule I am not sure when that would be. You do have me checking the whole crew." Calvin smiled back.

Abigail's grin became a scowl as she slid off the bio bed. "Well, if there's nothing else, Commander," she said resignedly. "I guess I need to tie up some lose ends before my forced day of leave."

"Not at all Captain. If you don't hear from me assume all your tests came back fine," Calvin replied.
