Doctor Collision

Mission: Dead Moon

Calvin stepped through the door of the Counselor's office. He hadn't been in there before, and took a moment to soak in the area. "No receptionist," Calvin said quietly to himself. He shrugged and tapped the chime to the inner office and waited.

After a long morning of counseling sessions Styveck sat in his oversized lounge chair sipping Vulcan tea, when his door chime shattered the peaceful stillness of the early afternoon. As he stood he placed his tea on the small coffee table, then walked to the door. With the press of a button the door slid open and a Lieutenant that he had not me previously stood there. “Hello Lieutenant, would you like to come in?”

“Calvin or Doc, please, no need for the formality of little pieces of medal we affix to our necks Counselor,” Calvin responded as he stepped in to follow the fellow officer inside. While a rarity, Calvin wore his full uniform, something he did consciously since he was meeting a new officer on board. “I thought it wrong we have not met yet. Calvin Morgan, Chief Medical Officer,” he said holding his hand out to shake hands.

Styveck shook hands with the ship's doctor, "Doc, it is nice to meet you, I'm Styveck or Counselor. Have a seat, are you here for a chat or counseling?" he asked the man before sitting down in his large arm chair.

Calvin sat down, almost in unison with the Counselor. "No, I'm not here for counseling," He said as he glanced about the room, trying to get a feel for the man sitting across from him. "No like any good medical professional, I will not voluntarily go to the doctor." His focus turned back to the Vulcan with a friendly smile. "Just to chat. I have been amiss to not come sooner, I believe it's important to know everyone in one's department. You may not hang out in Sickbay, but you're still medical."

“Noted, thank you for coming to my office, these counseling sessions have gone on nearly endlessly. It is most pleasant to conduct a conversation not requiring analysis,” Styveck explained. He had been onboard for about 48 hours and had counseled almost round the clock, due to the tragic events that proceeded his arrival. “As the ships doctor is there anyone in particular I need to speak with?”

Calvin frowned in contemplation to think about it. "I believe medical is okay. The shifts are pretty tight knit, and they have been quite supportive for each other. I think the event ended up being a bonding experience for a lot of them. In the long run I think it'll be a good thing. I can't speak for the other departments. I know I saw a lot of people mentally trashed throughout it all. It's one thing to be taking phaser fire from a ship you can see. It's another to have someone sneak inside and hide in the shadows where you expect to be safe. I can only assume some bruised egos and self doubt with some of the senior staff because of it."

“It has been disconcerting listening to a lot of the self doubt and taking on off guilt that was not theirs. I do believe that given time to talk openly of their experiences, we will progress accordingly. I do not foresee anything at this time that will prevent or inhibit the ship from performing its assigned duties. Though I do have some doubts about Lieutenant Levine, I hope she matured a little bit as you humans say.

"Lt. Levine?" He asked, "Lt. Levine," he muttered to himself, trying to put a face to the name. He settled back into the chair a bit more, putting one leg up on the other so his calf rested on his knee. He finally shook his head. "I cannot say I can put a face to the name, however I'm sure I've met her at some point. I take all the preliminary physicals so I can say I've personally checked everyone at least once." He thought about it for a moment. "I'm guessing the event has hit her harder than others?"

“I cannot answer that accurately at this time. I do not have a clear picture of her before and after the incident. She was suspended from duty by the security chief. Lieutenant Levine was caught at a duty station out of uniform. When confronted she lashed out at the new Chief and got herself relieved a few days. During our conversation she admitted to me she was out of uniform. I told her to admit to the new Security Chief that she was wrong and I would see that she was reinstated to the duty roster.” Styveck took a drink of his tea before continuing,”I thought it was the logical resolution but Levine lashed out again and I responded by giving her three more days of restriction.”

Calvin chuckled. "Well I won't lie, right now will probably be one of the few times I'm actually in uniform, but I also recognize that my lack of pomp and circumstance isn't proper. Does sound like the officer is handling something, whether it is the incident or something else. A mystery to be solved eventually by yourself hopefully."

"Yes, I do hope to get to the root cause of this abnormal behavior. I am afraid that if it is not resolved in a timely manner it may affect the Lieutenant's career. I do not wish to see it rise to that magnitude," Styveck replied as he interlaced his fingers.

"Mmm," Calvin replied. "That would be a shame for sure. I've seen people's careers end early because they were not fortunate enough to have someone recognize and help them." Calvin readjusted himself in his seat. "Well if you need anything from me don't hesitate to ask."

"Thank you Doctor, I do believe I will need to schedule an appointment in a few weeks for my annual physical evaluation per Starfleet Regulations."

"Your guess is as good as mine," Calvin responded with a smile as he stood up and extended his hand for a handshake. "It was good chatting with you."

"You as well Doctor, thank you," Styveck replied as he shook the doctor's hand.
