First Impression Incident Report

Posted on Mon Jan 10th, 2022 @ 3:45pm by Lieutenant Commander Calvin Morgan & Lieutenant Commander Evelyn Rozia & Linza (Lin) Esni

Mission: Double Bind
Location: Medical
Timeline: TBC

"I am a nomral human person."

Maybe it was the little 'jazz hands' at the end, or the horrible voice actor impression of a stale Federation neutral accent that did it. It probably wasn't that, as Keth had practised for hours in the mirror and in the turbolift to make his voice sound as close to human as possible.

But the jazz hands added just that hint of showmanship that really sold it.

"So, you see, if I speak like that from the other room they will never not know I am a Huanni! And I can watch them on the security feed, and if need be step out convince them to remain calm," Keth said enthusiastically. Though the focus of his enthusiasm was either on maintaining the spider web thin veneer of the Prime Directive, or the voyeurism and thinly veiled threat.

And at this point, who could rightly tell?

"The only reason I state this as an idea before they arrive, is that I am told I can be quite intimidated," Keth said..'.and frowned. "...I can be quite intimidating. Orrrr...I could hide in sickbay in one of the vents. I am quite stealthy you know."

"Orrrr," Evelyn pointed out, "We can presume that by seeing humans, which aren't their species, Trill," She gestured to herself and the spots that ran down her temples and vanished under her uniform, "And presume that they can extrapolate that there are many types of species of what they'd call aliens?" She quirked a smile, "These are supposed to be smart people."

"You in the vent is tempting though," Calvin muttered more to himself, but definitely loud enough for them to hear. He was working at a station with his back to them, and shuffled himself before turning back around. "Lets keep the theatrics to a minimum. I believe this whole situation has gotten to a dramatic and theatric level for them already. In less than a day, they've experienced more than they probably ever planned in a lifetime."

"Sooo...that's a no to my incredible voice acting?" Keth said, deeply disappointed. But one day. One Day. Keth sighed, but then perked up. "Oh well, I get to be a friendly face that will assure both their safety and yours doctor Calvin."

Linza just shook her head and laughed, mostly at Keth. "Keth in a vent, or voice acting. I think they'd find your voice, with no face to match it to, more intimidating than just seeing you."

"LIke the Wizard of Australlia," Keth nodded with an all-knowing tone.

Calvin ignored the comparison, not knowing it nor wanting to delve into the reasons why they were similar. "I did some preliminary checks of the two and all seemed well. Just need some detailed scans and have them answer some questions and we'll be set. Obviously the less technology they see the better, so we are going to be discreet about scans and information obtained." He felt slightly uneasy about it, not explaining the whole process to his patients, but the reasoning not to was sound.

"I'm sure they've got some sort of scanning device on the planet, so being as open as possible with that may help." Evelyn mused, "Being able to lift yourself out of orbit and actually have moon colonies that appeared to be growing tends to lean towards having efficient medical tech. Perhaps avoid the regenerators and some of the more 'miracle' tech, but scans should be all right."

"It might depend on what type of scanning they actually do. If its like old Earth tech, even with moon colonies, they might only do X-rays or something. If so," Linza stated, "Anything we have would seem absolutely amazing."

Keth nodded in understanding. "I'll get a lid off of a storage box and tape it over the replicator slot so they can't see the wonders of post-faminity."

Linza raised an eyebrow. "There must be a room somewhere that doesn't have a replicator, and there are some things we can obviously remove from any room as well."

"Er...I'm...not allowed to go into escape pods," Keth said as the words 'room without a replicator' rattled and clanked through his head. "I mean if the ships explode and I'm told to, sure I'll hop in. But, hehe, you see there was this thing that happened on the Atlantis that was, in retrospect, perhaps a tiny bit my fault if we really dig into the deeper meaning of cause and effect."

"Rather than tape a storage box over the slot, I can send Chief Terrix to deactivate it, turn it into a decorative alcove by just putting.. Something in it." Evie shrugged, "These two are going to be overwhelmed with everything they're seeing as it is, best to not draw too much attention to any one thing, like 'what is that box lid covering?'."

"Huum...or I could stand in front of it," Keth said, having a brainstorm in his tea cup.

"I do not believe you have the ability to stand in front of all the replicators, the entire time they are in a room," Calvin responded, a slight jab at the suggestion. "As far as technology, assume the worst and we will wait and see what is allowed. I assume Captain has someone working on a list."

"Maybe lock down the consoles?" Evelyn suggested, "I'm sure that a lot of damage could be done if they just idly search for information, and it's easier than trying to design a filter that would keep them out of the things that would be dangerous to their development."

"On the Atlantis, they had this Fe-Nine protocol that would render most of the LCAR's consoles inoperable. I don't know why they had it installed on their ship when I was there, very annoying being on duty and only being able to stand there and watch people," Keth huffed. Then he clicked his fingers...claws...finger beans? "Maybe the Astraea has the same protocol?"

"Disguising and shutting down completely so it isn't accidentally accessed might be best." Lin thought, "Perhaps leave some of the LCARs so the console still just makes music if they accidentally touch them?"

"Music breeds curiosity. Off would be best," Calvin replied, finishing up at the console and shutting it down. "Seems like this will have to be a ship wide decision, at least in the areas our guests will be in. Something we all have to be on the same page about. Not that they would blame us, as they as much as anyone would know why we would want to protect our technology from them, but one person letting on more than the other could lead to distrust."

"So why don't we just tell them we have advanced technology and that we have to hide it from them for their own good? These are scientists right? Pilots? Surely they understand the nature of classified materials?" Keth enquired.

“They already know that we have ships that can fly from other star systems, it goes to reason they’ll expect us to have a lot of other technology that they may or may not comprehend.” Evelyn partially raised a hand flat, then extended the other to counter it, “The difference that tech could make to their own society is extreme, and our orders are to prevent them from examining functional examples. They may understand the need, but engineers and scientists have one major thing in common: curiosity. If they know it exists, they’ll instinctively investigate it, even knowing that we can’t let them. Best to avoid the subject entirely rather than tell them that they can’t look at the big shiny thing.”

"That is a good point," Keth said as a lot of things began to make sense to him.

Linza nodded to the others. "So it sounds like the only controls they would have is lights, and bathroom related? I mean, we can't really take those things, right?" She wandered to a panel on the wall that controlled lights, "Could this be changed into one of those old light switches? And I'm sure the sonic shower could be turned into a water one, right?"

"Possibly. Maybe a consult with science to see what they've noticed on the planet would be best. Keep things similar," Calvin suggested, packing a medkit with supplies.

"Hopefully it is in their report somewhere, otherwise I'll see who I can talk to. I doubt it'd be to hard to setup...but I'm not an engineer."

Calvin nodded. “I must finish setting up. However it sounds like we have a plan. Let me know when they are arriving.”

"Soon," Keth said with a nod. He was helping.
