Evelyn/William

Posted on Sun Feb 7th, 2021 @ 12:40pm by Lieutenant Commander William Gunnison & Lieutenant Commander Evelyn Rozia

Mission: New Beginnings
Location: Transporter Room 3

Evelyn waited inside the transporter room as she nodded to the transporter chief. Waiting on the other end was the Chief of Operations for the Astraea and as requested, Evelyn had been called and was available to meet them. "Energizing." The Chief said quietly as he activated the transporter. Evelyn took a couple steps forward and stood a handful of feet in front of the pad as the shimmer of the transporter came and went in front of her.

"Good afternoon, Lieutenant Commander Gunnison!" She said with a bright smile after a heartbeat from the time the transport finished, "I'm Lieutenant Commander Evelyn Rozia, the Chief Engineer here on the Astraea."

"Good afternoon," Will said. "So you're the one who's going to keep us together, eh?"

"As best I can, as best I can." Evelyn agreed, reaching out with a welcoming handshake, "And you're the one that gets to keep us properly supplied and to make sure no one gets too lost hereabouts? Oh, and of course, making sure things that start to go wrong get brought to my attention before they do something that makes my job a bit harder?"

"That's the goal," Will said, taking the offered hand, "though on a ship of this size, I'm still working on the part about making sure no one gets lost."

"And that's where I come into play." She patted the PADD on her hip, "I've got a map here that I've got my people giving to everyone as they get on board and don't worry, you'll have one too shortly. I've been on board for months, so I know my way around like the back of my hand!" She theatrically looked at her hand, then frowned, rubbing the back of it on her pants to try to get a spot of something off of it.

"Almost could have used it earlier when my son and I dropped our stuff off and I met briefly with the captain," Will said. "We snagged a supply shuttle over that had a couple of spots open up at the last minute, so it was a bit unannounced. I wanted to take a bit of a look at the ship from the outside," he added in way of explanation. "I had a couple of other quick errands to run, hence the transporter use just now."

"And which is why I wasn't aware of your arrival..." Eve shook her head, taking the PADD out and handing it over, "And my bet is that no one even noticed your arrival either... Did you find your quarters all right, or did you give up?"

"I did speak briefly with an ensign after departing from the shuttlecraft," Will said, "and did check in with the captain, though I don't know how much word of my arrival got around. Part of traveling with an energetic 12-year-old is that one isn't always in a position to stop and smell the roses. Fortunately we were able to find our quarters. It's an old habit, stemming back to what happened on my first assignment after graduating from the Academy. I got on board, realized I had no idea of where I was or where I was supposed to be after about 20 minutes of wandering around, and had to ask for help from a random lieutenant who turned out to be my new department head."

"New... Department head?" That confused Evie for a few seconds, "Did someone else get assigned as Chief of Operations that no one bothered to let me know about?"

"Um, no, that was on my first assignment, not here," Will said.

Palm met forehead with a relatively loud smack and Evelyn ran her hand down her face, "Oh crap, you did say that, didn't you?" Her face reddened in a smidge of embarrassment, "I really do pay attention, I promise! But that's sort of an odd tradition to have.."

"Welcome to my life," Will said. "Anyway, it's no more or less odd than any other habit that the crew's had. One of our previous chief strategic operations officers had this idea that when she was told by Captain Laurens to meet with the other department heads on board, that that meant right away, to the point of going to my parents' home when I was on shoreleave on Earth, rather than waiting for the time I'd indicated with the ship that I would be returning."

"Oh my..." Evelyn shook her head in astonishment, "That's going a bit above and beyond, I would say. Have no fear for me on that regard, if I ever have to interrupt your shoreleave, I'll make sure to bring something to make up for it AND I'll make sure it's for a really good reason. Hell, if I have an emergency that requires your particular skills, I'd likely just transport you to where I needed you." She grinned, "Bugger that whole hunting you down thing."

"Well, if you should find it necessary to beam me right up," Will said, "I would hope that you give me a little bit of warning first. It might be a bit...awkward if you were to beam me up while I was right in the middle of a shower."

A mischievous smile crossed her face, "I promise you that if I have to beam you out of the shower, there would be a very, VERY good reason for it." Evelyn winked, "And I'd make sure that I had a towel or bathrobe or something as well."

"How considerate of you," Will said dryly. "Anyway, anything else you wanted to bring up while you've got me here?"

"I think that's about it." Evelyn said, musing for a moment, "Since you've already figured out where your quarters are, I'm sure finding your departmental offices and the bridge should be pretty easy for you." She brightened up, "But if you find any problems, please let me know! It's part of what I'm here for, right?"

"Indeed," Will said. "Though, speaking of me being beamed around, given the size of the ship I just may be beaming myself around in order to cut down on travel time, so my apologies in advance for any increased transporter maintenance that my doing so may cause."

"No worries, I fully expect people to use them fairly regularly to begin with. But..." Evelyn grimaced, "After you get used to the ship, I would still recommend using the lifts and walking and save the transporters for emergency usage. I'm not worried about the additional maintenance, I just feel it'd be better for everyone to know the layout of the ship really well."

"Understandable," Will said. "Well, thanks for checking in with me. It is appreciated."

"Hey, it's what I'm here for." She gave a slight smile, "If you have any question... Comm me."

"Will do."
